Well, here it goes… my first news letter as your new Lady Captain!! I am both delighted and honoured to be leading such a great group of ladies in golf. For the past year I have been well trained by our ex captain Rachel, and with an excellent committee behind me, I will try my best to carry on her good work. Do not hesitate to ask me or any of the ladies on the committee if you have any questions.

The new Committee for the next year, elected at the AGM on the 2nd December, are as follows;

Lady Captain Gudrun Bjarnadottir

Hon. Secretary Margaret Le Herissier

Asst. Hon. Secretary Irene Griffiths

Treasurer Carolyn Lennox

Competitions Secretary Juanita Adlington

Asst. Comp. Secretary Jane Osborne

Social Secretary Lesley Hill

Membership Secretary Kerry Cox

Handicap Secretary Ann Cross

Asst. Handicap Secretary Sandie Brodelet

Honorary Member Sue Langdon

As you can see there have been some changes on the committee. First of all I would like to thank Frances Shaw for her great work on the committee, but she deserves a break after being on for 7 years. Welcome to the two new committee members Irene and Jane and hopefully they will enjoy their time on the committee. I know we will have a busy, but fun, year ahead.

The following Annual Awards were presented at the Winter Presentation Evening, after the AGM and before the excellent meal – and of course the unforgettable entertainment, "Rachel - this is your golfing life"

Annual Subscriptions are now due and were increased at the AGM by ₤3 to ₤70.

A renewal notice is enclosed; please return your forms and cheques to the Membership Secretary, Kerry Cox, as soon as possible. As last year, the Membership Secretary will not be chasing members for late payments. Anyone who has not paid their subs by 1st March will find their membership lapsed and their name will be removed from the handicap list. Please remember that until your subscription is paid you will not be eligible for any competitions, and if you do miss 1st March cut off, then the joining fee of ₤135 will become payable.

The new 2009 Diaries will be sent to you on receipt of your subscriptions. A 2009 Fixtures List will be on the main notice board until the diaries arrive.

Match Results

The last match of the year was against Royal Guernsey on their course on 14th October 2008. The format for this match is though, 36 holes in one day, foursomes matchplay in the morning and singles matchplay in the afternoon after a quick lunch. Our girls fought hard for the Hopper Trophy but the result was Royal Guernsey 9 to Les Mielles 6. The 2008 annual team results were Les Mielles won 4, lost 4 and halved 2, a good result for us. Congratulations to all the team members. During the year we had 23 different ladies playing in the teams and the team awards were awarded to Isobel Brocken (silver division) and Mary Marr (bronze division). A Big thank you to Frances Shaw who has been a fantastic Team Manager and has done a great job over the last year. I am delighted to say that Patricia Parkin has agreed to take over from Frances as Team Manager for next year.

Forthcoming Competitions:

December 23rd  Secret Pairs (9 holes with snack afterwards and secret Santa)

January 6th Strings Competition

January 13th Stableford Competition (QC)

January 20th 5 Club Challenge

January 27th LADY CAPTAINS DRIVE IN

EWGA medals

From 31st January the LGU will not be running the LGU medals. EWGA will be running medal competition but with a few changes. There will be no alternate days for EWGA medals, so Tuesday ladies will be allowed to play on Saturdays and wise versa without having to write a letter asking for change of dates (applies only for EWGA medals). There will only be one division, one lady to qualify for the final in UK. The use of sky caddies will not be allowed. There is some further information on the board and also on www.englishwomengolf.org

JLGA news

Equipment Rental Finance Seniors League

This competition has now been running for five years and everyone who takes part seems to really enjoy the chance to play all the courses in the island in a friendly, and non-qualifying, competition. Before the last competition at La Moye our ladies were one point ahead but were beaten by the la Moye ladies and came second, but only one point behind. Royal Jersey held a most enjoyable cocktail party for the presentation evening and my thanks go to Irene Journeaux, our Senior Team Manager, for all her hard work, enthusiasm and organization. Well done to all our senior players.

Winter Stableford Competition

This competition is open to ANY LADY MEMBER and finishes on 31st March 2009. As most of you know this is only a nine hole competition, you can play as often as you like but you only enter your three best cards from three different course. Unfortunately both our trips have been cancelled due to bad weather, our next organized trip is to St. Clements on Friday 16th January to play 9 holes and then have lunch at Partners afterwards. A signup sheet will be on the notice board and we will be meeting at St. Clements at 10.00 am.

LADY CAPTAIN’S CHARITY

There will be no water this year instead it will be the two bunkers in front of the 6th green so if your ball lands in the sand please pay 50p (or more if you are feeling generous). The charity I have chosen is Jersey Asthma Society. This is a local charity and its aim is to promote Asthma and respiratory illness awareness and to give support, advice and information to sufferers and their families. The society also funds the Asthma and Respiratory Information Mornings which run every Saturday mornings.

Wishing you all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year – and a good golfing year in 2009!!

Gudrun Bjarnadottir
