It is really three months since the last newsletter – what a tremendously busy time it has been with glorious sunny weather and courses across the island in great condition (we won’t mention the rough at the Royal and La Moye!). Les Mielles Ladies have been busy in at home and away with matches, opens and invitation days and I hope you are all enjoying your golf as much as I am.

Les Mielles Ladies Open: What a good day, with over 80 entrants and ladies playing from Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney. Olivia Jordan-Higgins (Royal Jersey), playing off 1, broke the ladies course record with a gross 67 – breaking the record of 71 she set last year in our Open - to take the Griffiths Memorial Trophy. Frances Shaw also had a marvelous round with gross 75 (nett 68) and has now reduced her handicap to 6.6 – congratulations, Frances. It was great to welcome back old members and also see our new members all supporting the biggest day in our Les Mielles Ladies calendar.

Jersey Ladies Golf Championships: The competition was held at La Moye this year and many of our ladies entered in all three divisions – even those who had their arms twisted really enjoyed the event – and those who were not playing were ball-spotting (thank you ladies). There is a great atmosphere during the week of ladies golf, meeting up with all the island players and watching, especially in div 1, very good golf. There were some very tough matches but congratulations to Mary Marr for reaching the semi finals of division 3. This year it was your Lady Captain that reached the finals of Div 3 – and won!!! Many thanks to my support team – especially Super Caddie, Trish Parkin. I am happy to report that I traveled to Guernsey as Jersey Bronze Champion to play the Guernsey Bronze Champion, 14-year-old Bekki Le Cheminant, for the Reed Trophy and was thrilled to bring back the Trophy to Jersey. A great match down to the last hole – sorry Caddie for giving you palpitations!

Team Matches: Great results for the team matches since March. On 1st April we played St. Clements away and won the Challenge Trophy (Silver) 3 -2 and the Quail Salver (Bronze) was halved with 2 all but Les Mielles retained the trophy. Les Mielles played Les Ormes at home on 16th April for the Suzanne Trower Trophy and won 6 ½ to 3 ½. Recently we played Alderney at home the day before our Open at won 7 -1 taking back the Annual Challenge Trophy. Well done to all the members of the team, especially those playing for the first time, and thanks to Frances, our Team manager, for all her hard work. Just three matches left – Royal Jersey next week, La Grande Mare on 1st August and Royal Guernsey in October – and I hope we can continue our winning record for our sponsors, Belgravia.

EQR Seniors League: The ladies playing in the Seniors League (55 and above) are pacing themselves nicely under the super leadership of Irene Journeaux. At the moment, after three rounds, Les Mielles have 14 points in third place with joint leaders of Les Ormes and La Moye on 16. The next round is at Les Mielles on 7th July so good luck ladies.

Seniors Invitation Day: The date for this popular nine hole outing is Friday, 11th July. The list is up on the noticeboard so if you are 50 or over and have a friend you would like to invite to the club please put your name up on the list or let Irene Journeaux know.

Good Luck to our UK Qualifiers – Trish Parkin and Lesley Hill off in early August to play the LGU Gold and Silver Regional Competitions.

Tuesday 8th July Lady Captain’s Day – team stableford off the blue tees!!! & lunch on LC afterwards

Saturday 26th July Broadlands Mixed Open with evening dinner – invite that man and play on this fun day

Friday 15th August Husbands & Wives – ok you have to invite your husband this time

Tuesday, 23rd Sept Les Mielles Ladies Invitation Day – lots of warning to invite a friend to Les Mielles – let’s try to fill the course this year!

Change of Day re LGU Medals: A notice was placed on the noticeboard but in case any member missed this I would confirm that from April 2008 the Committee agreed that if a member finds they are unable to play the LGU Medal on their normal day of play (Tuesday or Saturday) and wish to play on the alternate day they must write to the Lady Captain with at least a week’s notice requesting the change – i.e. if your normal day is Saturday the request must be received by the previous Saturday (for the Tuesday) and if your normal day is Tuesday it must be received the Saturday one week before the competition (not just the Tuesday before the Saturday). Letters can be placed in the Ladies Box or emailed to westlynn@jerseymail.co.uk and will be held by the Handicap Secretary thereafter.

La Grande Mare Open and match – Thursday 31st July and Friday 1st August: Is anyone interested in coming to Guernsey on an overnighter to play in the Open and the match against the Grande Mare Ladies. We have a few already on the list but if any member finds they cam go please let Gudrun know on tel. 639160.

Les Mielles Summer Presentation – Tuesday 15th July 2008:
Enclosed in the invitation to our Summer Presentation – this an important night in our calendar when the prizes are presented to those members who have won competitions during the first six months of this year. Please make every effort to be there – especially if you are a prize winner – it is a good night, a chance to catch up with all the gossip and have a few drinks with friends.

Finally a big welcome to Jayne Baker as a member of Les Mielles – it is good to have you back but enjoying yourself on the course not working in the booking office!

Wishing all ‘the pink ladies’ a great summer of golf and remember ……. if you happen to hit a ball into the 15th water (or the 5th if you are feeling generous) a 50p fine goes into my LC Charity tin – ‘After Breast Cancer Support Group, Jersey.

Rachel, Lady Captain
