LES MIELLES LADIES GOLF CLUB September Newsletter 2008 Welcome to the September newsletter – just squeezing into the right month – but the Club has been so busy during the summer that getting down to office tasks has seemed very difficult for your Lady Captain!! This is now the Individual Stableford (moved from 14th) – there will be a fun comp on 14th. Summer Eclectic: This finishes on Tuesday 21st October – all medal results automatically count plus 6 wild cards – the competition is getting very close – if you haven’t put in all your wild cards yet there is still time to win!Winter Eclectic: This starts on Saturday, 1st November and you are allowed 8 wild cards in total – no medals. JLGA Winter Stableford: This is a popular annual competition and started on 1st September 2008 and I hope you have all entered as closing date was 29th September. Entry fees go towards sending the Island Ladies Golf Team to the Island Games 2009. The format is similar to previous years – the 3 best 9 hole cards (stableford) to be submitted from the six courses available. As in previous years the JLGA Rep (Gudrun) will be organising group visits during the winter months to the other clubs – the golf is not normally brilliant but the fun over lunch afterwards always is. Team Matches: After a great start to the season the team have had a couple of tough matches. On 3rd July we played the Royal Jersey away and the results – Silver Team lost 5 to 1 and Bronze Team 5 to 1 – do not show how close the matches were. Last year at Les Mielles we beat the Royal and they were determined to get their revenge. Our team played very well in windy conditions but the home team knew their course too well with Sue Langdon and Isobel Brocken being our only winners – well done ladies. The gloves will be off next year at Les Mielles! The team then went to Guernsey at the end of July to play La Grande Mare – always an extremely tricky course! Unfortunately we lost 5 to 3 but 5 matches ended on 18th hole and just didn’t go our way – however La Grande Mare ladies were great hostesses and we enjoyed the fight! The last match of the season is against Royal Guernsey on Tuesday 14th October in Guernsey where the team will play 36 holes – foursomes in the morning and singles Matchplay in the afternoon – and we will be doing our utmost to win against the strong competition that Guernsey usually put out. Winter Coaching Sessions: Last winter Lynne Cummins ran some excellent lessons on the short game and Lynne is happy to give Les Mielles Ladies some coaching sessions again this winter. The sessions have already started and are on Thursday mornings from 9.30 – 11.00 a.m. at a cost of £10 commencing at the Driving Range. There will be two elements covered each session and there is no need to sign up, but just turn up. I would really recommend attending these lessons and spending time on the short game, it has helped my game this year enormously. Congratulations: our ladies have been doing very well during the summer at invitation days and opens often placing but I would mention the following:Ann Cross – outright winner of the Les Ormes Ladies OpenBetty Le Luan – outright winner of the St Clement’s Ladies OpenGudrun Bjarnadottir – bronze gross winner at St. Clement’s Ladies Open – most pars in bronze & lowest putts (24)Frances Shaw – winner of St. Peter’s Open and winner of the Western Golf Range Golf Society OpenJuanita Adlington – winner of Devil’s Hole OpenAli Eagar – winner of Trinity Arms Open Welcome to our new members – we are pleased to have Gloria Pallot-Brown, Sue Thomas, Erika Reidler and Olga Maciel as members of the club. It is great to see them out on the course immediately, enjoying their golf and taking part in our competitions – I hope you will all continue to have fun with Les Mielles Ladies both on and off the course. Signing up for competitions – just a reminder that you only need to sign up on the noticeboard and the booking office staff will input on the computer, unless you sign near to the competition in which case you must add your name to the computer. Should you find you are unable to play please ring both your playing partners with your apologies – there have been times when a three ball has become a single player and then she has no-one to play with. If we know in advance then the situation can be sorted out. Another point of etiquette is always mark your card on the next tee and clear the green quickly – and if it is your honour please mark after you have teed off – just a little speed helps the field move efficiently. A big thank you to all the members who made the Invitation Day last Tuesday so successful. It was the last year with Sure.mobile and they have been very generous sponsors. John McCulloch came from the company to present the prizes and he soon looked at home with 56 chatty ladies – but I think he enjoyed the final part of the day the best – a one club challenge up the first and down the ninth with 8 ladies - John managed a par on the first and a birdie on the ninth so who needs more clubs! John forgot to mention whilst at the lunch that 1st December is the day when any mobile customer can change to the Sure network and take their present mobile number with them. Winter Presentation and Annual General Meeting A date for your diary – Tuesday 2nd December – and once we have got the business part of the evening out of the way we hand out all the prizes from medals and competitions from mid July. It is a great night – time to chat to our fellow golfers and let our hair down over dinner and a few glasses of wine – so please make a special effort to attend and welcome in your new Captain – Gudrun Bjarnadottir. Lastly thank you to everyone who have donated funds towards my charity during the summer – please keep putting the fifty pence pieces in the box for Against Breast Cancer Support Group, Jersey Branch if you are in the water!
Happy Golfing
Rachel, Lady Captain
